Pope Francis will travel to the northern Mexican border state of Chihuahua early next year. His visit is expected to include Ciudad Juárez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Mexico's secretary of foreign relations on Wednesday revealed the states Pope Francis will visit during his trip to Mexico early next year.

The pontiff will travel to Michoacan, Chiapas and the northern border state of Chihuahua in addition to Mexico City.  A representative with the Pope's international travel team visited Ciudad Juárez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, last week to tour various venues including a state prison.

A stop in Juárez has not yet been confirmed, but the Francis said earlier this year he wished to visit the city to call attention to the plight of migrants.

The Catholic Diocese in Juárez said it expects more details on the pope's schedule on December 12th, the same day Mexico celebrates its patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe.
