For many people, the Fourth of July is celebrated with fireworks and festivities, but for dogs it can be a nightmare. Maricopa County animal shelters are seeking volunteers to help keep the canines calm.

For the second year in a row, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control will be hosting the Calming the Canines event on July 4.

Spokesman Jose Santiago said volunteers will help the dogs sleep better and calm their nerves throughout the night of fireworks.

“Dogs in particular can hear noises at a much louder decibel than we do. During any festivities where fireworks are going off the dogs can hear them louder, closer than the average person can and it can make them uncomfortable, it can scare them. They're unfamiliar with what that sound is," Santiago said.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring something comfortable to sit on and show up any time from 8 to 11 p.m.
