Joaquín Guzmán Loera, one of Mexico’s most notable druglords, might finally stand trial in an American court. Mexico has authorized his extradition to the United States.

Guzmán, better known as “El Chapo,” is currently held in a Mexican Federal prison in the border town of Ciudad Juárez.

But the drug trafficker and alleged leader of the Sinaloa Cartel was notified by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs that he will be extradited to the United States.

Last July, El Chapo reached notoriety after escaping from the Altiplano Prison in Mexico.

Actor Sean Penn and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo published a controversial interview with him in January, and Guzmán was soon arrested again.

Guzmán faces charges in US Federal Court for drug-related crimes, including trafficking, weapon possession and money laundering.

El Chapo’s lawyers can appeal the extradition, which could delay the process for several months.
