June 13, 2016

A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot dead a man who crossed the border illegally into Arizona and allegedly assaulted the agent near Somerton last Thursday night. The agent was injured in the incident.

A Border Patrol statement said the agent was arresting the man when the alleged assailant grabbed the agent’s radio and his baton and began to hit the agent in the face while he attempted to take the agent’s gun from its holster.

Both men were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center where the alleged assailant was pronounced dead. The agent was injured and required stitches to close at least one wound. He also received a concussion.

Neither man has been identified.

The agent is on administrative lead while Customs and Border Protection’s use of force incident team investigates the incident.
