Lockheed Martin will close its Goodyear plant in 2015. Several states, incuding Texas and California, are also being hit by the closures.

Lockheed Martin is leaving Goodyear and taking about 600 jobs with it. The defense company is scheduled to close its Valley plant by mid 2015.

But, Arizona is not alone. Five states are being hit by closures. A press release by Lockheed Martin said the cutbacks are in response to declining government spending on defense.

Goodyear Spokeswoman Romina Khananisho said the closure’s implications reach much farther than her city.

“We’re a huge aerospace and defense state, and then, you know, the country’s got to deal with this stuff, and so this isn’t just a city thing,” Khananisho said. “And that’s really what the concern is, is how much is this going to impact us moving forward as a state and as a nation.”

Khananisho said Lockheed Martin is one of the largest employers in Goodyear. She said the city has several other large employees, such as Macy’s and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
