Maricopa County Animal Care and Control had to euthanize 19 dogs in just over a week due to a recent outbreak of distemper at its East Valley shelter.

After a month battling parvo and distemper outbreaks, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control announced Tuesday that its East Valley shelter has lifted its quarantine and is adopting out animals again.

The shelter announced the quarantine in early June, at which point it said that 19 dogs had to be euthanized in the span of a week because of the distemper virus.

In a press release Friday, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control said that despite the quarantine lift, the shelter will not be taking in any stray or lost dogs and also is barring dog-to-dog intros until after July 5.

However, the shelter is allowing the general public to walk around for meet and greets.

According to the shelter, this Friday is expected to be one of the busiest days of the year for the pound, which expects 100 or more pets in the Valley shelters after the Fourth of July holiday.
