The nationally-syndicated Katie Couric talk show "Katie!" came to Arizona to honor former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband former astronaut Mark Kelly.

The show also traveled to Arizona State University to raise 1 million meals for the St. Mary’s Food Bank. Students came through with donated canned goods and other items. Fry’s Grocery Stores and Con-Agra helped the show surpass its goal, with 1.5 million donated meals.

Kelly appeared on the show telling Couric that Giffords continues to be upbeat, despite struggling with her recovery.

“Often the last thing she might say before going off to do some therapy is, ‘Fight, fight, fight,’ you know she’s just really positive and doesn’t give up,” Kelly said.

He said the couple has signed up 500,000 people on line in their effort to toughen gun laws, and he said they are raising the resources to be effective in the next election, but they realize it will take time to be successful.
