Apple’s plan for a new plant in the East Valley could land the company a hefty grant.

Earlier this month, Apple announced it wants to buy an empty plant in Mesa that was supposed to be for First Solar but never got off the ground. The computing giant plans to use the site to manufacture parts out of sapphire including lenses.

On Tuesday, the Arizona Commerce Authority announced Apple qualifies for a $10 million grant if the plan meets investment and job creation targets. Apple’s contractor could also qualify for an income tax credit.

On Monday night, the Gilbert Unified School District board signed off on a tax break for the Apple site, the final local agency that needed to give the manufacturing plant the okay.
