Highway patrol agencies across the country will be adding more man power along Interstate 40 on Wednesday. Arizona is one of seven states participating in the effort to decrease collisions.

The campaign is called the "Drive Toward Zero Fatalities" and includes highway patrol and police agencies from California to North Carolina. The Arizona Department of Public Safety has committed to having one high patrol officer for each 20 miles of I-40. That means 17 officers across the stretch of road in northern Arizona.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said increased police presence should make drivers slow down and pay more attention.

“What we’re trying to do is decrease mistakes drivers make,” Graves said. “Improper lane change, fatigued drivers – a big problem in this state, causing an enormous of amount of crashes, DUI drivers, drunk or impaired drivers.”

Graves said the campaign will take place Sunday as well. Patrols will also be stepped up on other Arizona highways including Interstate 17. Last year, there were more than 300 crashes and two deaths on Arizona roads during the Thanksgiving holiday.
