Despite lower-than-normal gas prices across the country, Arizonans paid about $0.22 more than the national average for a gallon of fuel last week.

AAA Arizona spokesperson Aldo Vazquez says the Labor Day weekend average was the cheapest in three years — which is good for travelers.

“In Arizona, it’s $2.81 per gallon, that’s a 3-cent increase since last Monday,” he said. “That doesn’t seem to have a big effect on how many people we’re going to see traveling.”

In fact, Vazquez says this summer may set records for holiday travel.

“Americans are traveling a lot this summer and AAA forecasts the highest memorial day travel volume in 14 years, and a record number of Independence Day travelers, and Labor Day should continue that trend,” he said.

Vazquez says gas prices should remain stable into the week, barring any major stock disruption or demand spike.

“If there’s a supply disruption or increase in demand this week, the pump prices in the region could increase moderately because of tighter stock levels,” he said.
