Grand Canyon Replaces 1960s-Era Water Pumps

A major project is getting underway Monday at the Grand Canyon. Two water pumps from the 1960s are being replaced.

Grand Canyon spokeswoman Lily Daniels said the new pumps will provide up to 700 gallons of water per minute.

“This increased rate is going to help us to operate them during off peak energy hours, and it’s gonna result in a lower cost for our water consumers, and this new system is also going to allow us to operate it remotely, reducing our man hours," Daniels said.

She said visitors will have to use a bypass trail near the construction site, and there will be a lot of helicopters overhead, bringing in materials. The project will continue into May 2020.
