Flash-flood warnings were issued Monday morning for parts of Maricopa, Pinal and Gila counties, and Apache Junction was hit particularly hard.

Overnight and early morning rain caused flooding that led to more than 20 road closures in the city.

Several motorists called for rescues after getting stuck in their cars. City spokesman Al Bravo said staffers were trying to make sure everyone was safe before assessing any storm damage.

“A lot of the city has washes that flow through from the Superstition Mountains down into the city," Bravo said. "They can bring a lot of debris and they can bring a lot of things in through the washes that can damage stuff. So we try to tell everybody to stay out of the washes and keep your eyes and ears open today.”

Bravo said some of the city’s gauges registered three inches of rain in just six hours Monday morning.
