Chandler will be installing 160 cameras at 40 intersections, one camera for each direction in the summer of 2020.

Chandler will be using thermal cameras at intersections to help the flow of traffic. The cameras will be able to detect bicyclists as well as vehicles, compared to traditional cameras that can only detect cars.

The city will be installing 160 cameras at 40 intersections, one camera for each direction in the summer of 2020. 

Dana Alvidrez is a city transportation engineer, she explains one of the benefits to the new cameras. She says, “We can better serve our bicyclists conveniently, they don't have to push the button when they are in the bike lane they will just be detected now.”

She also mentions how the cameras shouldn't be affected by the weather, “Sometimes at dusk and dawn we would have problems with glare, it (cars) might not get recognized. So this will help us to minimize those outside sources that could mess with our system and help it be a little bit more accurate.”

The city has been testing thermal cameras along Chandler Boulevard already and according to Alvidrez, worked well during monsoon. She anticipates the same results with the ones they are installing next year. They plan to install more, even after their initial installation.
