The question over how much public employees should make came to light after the Arizona Republic inquired about a substantial pay raise for the CEO of the county’s medical system.

Steve Purves currently makes $600,000 a year as president and chief executive officer of Valleywise Health, formerly known as the Maricopa County Integrated Health System. Purves can also get up to $125,000 a year in performance bonuses.
