Aging MVD Computer System Crashes Tuesday Morning

The computers at Motor Vehicle Division offices around Arizona went down for about two hours Tuesday morning — and it's not the first time the system has gotten overloaded.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the MVD computer system is getting old, and as it processes more and more transactions, it's starting to show its age.

When workers at the dozens of locations around Arizona log in at the beginning of the day, sometimes the system gets overloaded and fails. That's what happened from about 8:20 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to ADOT spokesman Timothy Tait.

"We know that when a customer goes to a Motor Vehicle Division office, it's not something that's high on their priority list," Tait said. "It's something they have to do, but not necessarily something they want to do. So we want to do everything we can to make it an easy experience for customers."

To that end, Tait says the agency is looking at ways to upgrade the MVD computer system. The Service Arizona website was not affected.
