Enrollment at Northern Arizona University has dropped for the first time in nearly 15 years, which is a significant development, but not necessarily a unique one.

The national economy’s strength over nearly a decade has led fewer people to need increased education, and possibly, not as many are taking the traditional higher-education path.

Eric Kelderman, senior reporter at the Chronicle of Higher Education, has been covering college enrollment extensively.
