ADOT Holds Public Hearing On Broadway Curve Expansion

Per federal requirements, ADOT hosted the Environmental Assessment Hearing to listen to concerns about upgrading the Broadway Curve.
This 11-mile stretch of I-10 is located between the I-17 split and Loop 202. It sees about 300,000 vehicles daily.
The plan calls for six general purpose lanes, two HOV lanes, and what’s known as a collector-distributor lane.
ADOT’s Tom Herrmann said the collector-distributor would act as a mix between a frontage road and a freeway allowing drivers traveling a short distance to get on and off easier.
Heidi Champony had good things to say about some other elements.
“We love the idea that there’s going to be crossing bridges. I know that they’re encouraging more foot traffic and more public transportation.”
John Hobbs has seen a widened highway directly affect his neighborhood. He said he wished there had been better planning decades ago.
“I just wish they would have a better planning so we wouldn’t need all these highways. If they had urban planning in place 40 years ago we wouldn’t be having this problem right now.”
If ADOT determines there are no significant impacts, construction could begin late next year. The department will continue to receive public comment on their website until Nov. 18. The construction could take up to four years to complete.
