A former Phoenix police officer has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a deal that will spare him another trial. 

Under the deal, Richard Chrisman, faces seven to 14 years in prison. The former officer was convicted of assault in September, but the jury failed to reach verdicts on other counts.

He was charged after he shot and killed an unarmed man and his dog during a 2010 domestic violence call. Chrisman said it was self-defense, but his partner testified that he was not provoked.

His pleas will spare him another trial on second-degree murder and animal cruelty. Sentencing for the assault conviction and the manslaughter charge is set for Dec. 20.
