The Arizona Senate has voted to ban some new drivers from using cell phones or other communication devices behind the wheel. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

MARK BRODIE: The bill would prohibit drivers younger than 18 from using the devices for the first six months of driving. Violators would face fines, and more time of not being able to use their cell phones, although it would be a secondary offense, meaning a police officer would have to pull the driver over for another violation. Supporters say younger drivers are more susceptible to distractions, and need to keep their full attention on the road. AAA Arizona, which has lobbied for the bill, cites a new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, which found electronic devices are the most common distraction for young drivers. Critics, though, argue the state shouldn’t be dealing with this kind of restriction. Tuesday’s 18-11 vote in the Senate sends the bill back to the House for a final vote.
