As Arizona Republicans Defend Trump, Cindy McCain Calls Them Out
On Wednesday, the impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump goes public.
The bipartisan committee leading the inquiry has conducted private hearings to this point. That has drawn criticism from some Republicans, including Arizona Congressional members.
"The Democrats are grasping for straws," said Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko, "I mean, first they were convinced it was Russia, er, collusion, then they were convinced it was obstruction of justice, and now they're turning to this."
Lesko joined fellow congressional Republicans Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar in condemning the impeachment proceedings.
"Somebody's innocent until they're proven guilty," said Rep. Gosar, "And, it is sad that we see a lack of allegiance to this country and to the office of the president."
Over the weekend, Cindy McCain wondered, on CNN's "The Axe Files," if the Republicans' will to speak freely died along with her husband, the late Senator John McCain.
"I think John provided a lot of cover for other members and when he would do it, then they could get behind him. And, I'm not seeing that ... rudder in the Senate right now," she reflected.
McCain added that it doesn't help when many Republicans are in a battle to get re-elected this coming year.
