November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness month. And on Saturday, more than a dozen Alzheimer’s disease and caregiving organizations will gather to help raise awareness about an illness that affects an estimated 140,000 Arizonans.

And that number is projected to increase to 200,000 by 2025, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Which is why the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and several community partners and organizations are hosting the Shine a Light on All Dementias event at the state Capitol

Heather Mulder is with Banner Alzheimer’s Institute. She says an event like the one on Saturday can introduce caregivers to some of the available supports.

"Often times when people become a caregiver of someone with dementia this is the first time you’ve done this. And so you have no idea there are all of these supports out there," she said.

The event will end by illuminating the Capitol dome purple.
