Twenty years ago, storytelling events were not the cultural phenomenon they are today. In fact, when the Moth started in the late '90s, it was in a living room.

Now, the Moth and it’s storytelling events take place all over the country all the time — including here in Phoenix, where the Moth holds a StorySLAM every month. They're open mic storytelling competitions where 10 storytellers are selected at random. The storytellers are given a theme and 5 minutes each to tell their story.

Tonight, the Moth Phoenix is holding is GrandSLAM at the Pressroom. Ten winners from the year will compete for the title of Story Champion.

The Show sat down with local host Angelica Lindsey-Ali ahead of the event.
