Local protests planned as U.S. Supreme Court prepares for SB 1070 arguments
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments April 25 on Arizona’s illegal immigration enforcement law. To mark the occasion, immigrant-rights activists are planning to protest the law in Phoenix. Devin Browne reports.
DEVIN BROWNE: The main question in the case is whether federal immigration laws keep state and local law enforcement from dealing with immigration. More than 40 amicus briefs have been filed both in favor and against the law – Alessandra Soler Meetze, with Arizona’s ACLU, helped write a brief against it.
ALESSANDRA SOLER MEETZE: And we argued that SB 1070 exceeds the very limited authority under which states can engage in immigration enforcement.
DEVIN BROWNE: The Court will hear arguments following the state’s appeal of a lower-court ruling. That decision blocked police from enforcing several provisions of the Arizona law. A decision in the case is expected in June.
