The city of Phoenix said it has ended homelessness among veterans. Mayor Greg Stanton made the announcement Thursday morning on national TV.

The mayor said Phoenix was able to get its last chronically-homeless veteran off the streets, but he told MSNBC there is still work to do to break the cycle of homelessness.

“And, that may be health care, that may be mental, mental health training and or treatment, maybe it’s substance abuse treatment, whatever is ailing that person that’s causing the homelessness, we need to make sure that in addition to permanent supportive housing they have the support services," Stanton said.

Stanton said Phoenix was able to end homelessness among veterans by making it a top priority, getting the business community involved and by getting non-profit housing agencies to put veterans at the top of their lists, when housing opportunities became available.
