Last month, the Scottsdale City Council narrowly approved a mixed-use development along the canal in Old Town known as Southbridge Two.

But opposition to it was fierce, as concerns were expressed about the height of the project — two towers exceeding 125 feet — and its impact on the flavor and atmosphere of Scottsdale.

And now opponents have filed petition sheets with more than 17,000 signatures calling for Scottsdale voters to get a chance to overturn the council vote.

Wayne Schutsky, managing editor of The Scottsdale Progress, has reported on the story.
