AmeriCorps members provide respite care to veterans and military families in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Americorps volunteer program began in 1993 — at least in part as a way to encourage more young people to go into public service.

It remains in existence today, with a number of offshoots.

One of those is called “Legacy Corps,” currently run by ASU and operating at 16 locations in nine states.

The program’s focus is on providing respite care for veterans and their families.

David Swindell, director of the Center for Urban Innovation at ASU, is the head of Legacy Corps and is with The Show to talk more about it.
