Arizona spent less on teacher pay, classroom instruction and school administration spending than every other state and the District of Columbia in 2013.

A just-released survey from the Census Bureau shows Arizona has one of the highest rates of federal spending and the lowest rates of state spending on education.

The report shows that Arizona spent a little more than $7,200 per student in 2013.

That’s broken down to about $4,000 on instruction, $2,800 on salaries and a little less than $350 on administration. Arizona ranks last in all those categories.

According to the Census report, the national average per student was $10,700.

Federal and state dollars provide the funding for education. Arizona has the fifth highest dependence on federal dollars, while spending the least state dollars.
