Officer Scott Sefranka is in critical condition after stopping two attempted robbery suspects on New Year's Eve.

Phoenix police have identified the officer involved in a New Year’s Eve shooting after he tried to stop the car of some armed robbery suspects. Thirty-four-year-old Officer Scott Sefranka is a seven-year veteran, who was shot when one of the suspects grabbed his weapon, according to Commander Louis Tovar.

“Scott, yes, is in critical condition still,” Tovar said. “It’s just, he’s not conscious, he’s in a highly-sedated mode right now, where it’s just a vigil at this point to monitor and treat him, in order to prevent infection.”

The suspects, Roger Sharp and David Murray, fled the scene on foot but were arrested in a Scottsdale neighborhood. Police said they recovered both a money bag containing $18,000 that was stolen from two people making a deposit at a bank and the officer’s gun.

Police Chief Daniel Garcia said community involvement made a difference in making the two arrests.  A sheriff’s posse member, who tried to help the officer and is not being identified at his family’s request, is also in critical condition.
