The Maricopa Public Library is offering curbside pickup for library books.

Many communities across Arizona have cut off physical access to public libraries, but in the city of Maricopa, the library is offering curbside service.

Card holders can place orders for books and DVDs by phone, email or through the library’s website. When their order is ready, they can walk or drive up to the library and a staff member will deliver a bag with items that have been wiped down.

With so many places closed, Community Services Director Nathan Ullyot said people are looking for options and “people are making choices on what’s available and what the recommendations are and that’s why we're not trying to make choices for people, we're trying to provide and focus on what we can do based on the guidelines and recommendations.”

Since launching curbside service Monday, the library’s attracted about 25 to 30 customers a day. That included 163 items checked out and 910 returned.

As word spreads, Ullyot expects the library will attract new customers.

“I think people will start to say, ‘Hey the library has all of these things that I never really thought about.’ They don’t think about the library having, you know, DVDs, they don’t think about the library video games that kids can try out before they buy them,” he said.

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is 520-568-2926. Although Copper Sky Recreation Complex is closed, residents can check out equipment to play basketball, pickleball and disc golf in the park.

Curbside service is also offered at Maricopa City Hall on Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents can park outside the front entrance and call 520-568-9098 for help. The city is asking people when possible to complete forms before arriving. Many documents can be found online.
