Salons, barbershops, massage parlors and other personal services have joined the list of businesses forced to close as the state tries to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Because it is basically impossible to cut someone’s hair or do their nails while maintaining a six-foot distance, Gov. Doug Ducey ordered these businesses to shut down, but only after he was repeatedly questioned about it and pressured by mayors and other local officials. Ducey commented on this move during Arizona PBS's COVID-19 town hall on April 2.

“What I said is we focused on shutting down as much as we could of these issues to slow that spread," Ducey said. "If there’s additional guidance that’s necessary — because those services are not covered under the order.”

Local officials and people in these industries have been pointing out for weeks that their work puts them at odds with CDC guidance. Suzie Tringali has been among Ducey’s critics. She’s the owner of The Little Shop of Hair, a studio in Phoenix. She chose to close her space a month before the governor took action.

The Show spoke with Tringali about her reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on her livelihood.
