Arizona Legislature Won't Reconvene In April
After Arizona lawmakers approved an emergency budget and a coronavirus relief package on March 23, they adjourned with plans to return to the Capitol by this Monday.
In a memo to House lawmakers and staff, Speaker Rusty Bowers (R-Mesa) wrote that won't happen as scheduled.
"While we had hoped to get back to work then, it has become clear that it is not yet safe to reconvene the Legislature," Bowers wrote.
Bowers wrote he and Senate President Karen Fann (R-Prescott) will reassess their options for the Legislature to return to Phoenix at the end of April.
Bowers added that deciding when it’s safe to bring lawmakers back to the Capitol will depend on state and federal guidelines for social distancing during the pandemic.
He also encouraged lawmakers to stay tuned on Thursday, when the state's Finance Advisory Committee will meet and discuss updated revenue forecasts that will provide a glimpse of the impact the coronavirus will have on state finances.
