Incumbents will face off in August primaries, November general elections

May 31, 2012

More than 200 candidates for Congress, state Legislature and Corporation Commission have filed their petition signatures to qualify for the ballot. Wednesday was the deadline to get their signatures to the Secretary of State’s office, and starts a ten-day window for campaigns or their supporters to challenge those signatures. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

MARK BRODIE: Nine of the 30 state senators will run unopposed. That includes Senate President Steve Pierce, Majority Leader Andy Biggs, and incumbents Michelle Reagan and Steve Gallardo. August’s primary will feature several Senate races with familiar names - including those between former Senate President Russell Pearce and fellow Republican Bob Worsley, GOP Senators John Nelson and Don Shooter, and state Representative Katie Hobbs against former Senator Ken Cheuvront, both Democrats. There will also be some current lawmakers facing each other in November’s general election, including a Senate race between Senator Jerry Lewis and Representative Ed Ableser.
