The fallout from Supreme Court's ruling on SB 1070

June 27, 2012

Former state lawmaker Chris Herstam and John MacDonald, owner of local lobbying and consulting firm Policy AZ, explain the reactions of politicians to the Supreme Court's ruling on SB 1070. Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, talks about the perspective of the business community.

Herstam says it’s mind-boggling to hear victory speeches from Governor Jan Brewer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He says politicians who have made legislation on immigration their whole platform will face a desperate situation now that SB 1070 is getting resolved.

MacDonald says it’s silly season for politics right now, and a lot of politicians are relying on hyperbole for the election year. He says in order to get a real grasp on what’s important you have to look at what they spend campaign funds on, not what they say to the media. McDonald says there is only one currency that matters in the legislature, and that’s the vote. He says that in regard to immigration, politicians won’t be able to gather the votes necessary to make any big changes.

Hamer says this issue won’t come to a close until the presidential election is over and everyone can calm down long enough to make lasting decisions.
