Tucson Unified may close schools to address budget crisis

The Tucson Unified School District is considering making drastic changes in its district to deal with next school year’s multi-million dollar shortfall.
The Tucson Unified School District has projected a $17 million budget deficit for the next school year. To cope with the budget crisis, the district is considering several actions, including closing schools, reducing programs and salaries, laying off more than 300 teachers, or increasing the number of students in classrooms.
District Superintendent John Pedicone has recommended closing several schools and consolidating them into a newer and larger facility. He says the cost can be covered through a bond election.
