The Arizona House has voted to take the cell phone out of the hands of teen drivers. Under a bill now headed for the Senate, teens with a learner’s permit and those in their first six-months of driving are barred from using a cell-phone while they are behind the wheel, even if it is hands free. Rep. Karen Fann said the measure just adds to the restrictions Class G drivers already face.

“They cannot drive after 10 p.m., they cannot drive with a bunch of fellow teen students in the car with them. That's going to be distracting," said Fann.

She said the whole purpose of the Class G license is to make sure the students give 100 percent attention to their own driving and to becoming good defensive drivers.

Opponents, like Rep. Kelly Townsend, say restricting teen cell phone use is just a step away from removing phones from all drivers. She said decisions like that should be left to the kids’ parents.
