The Transportation Security Administration is warning travelers to take stock of what is in their bags, before heading to the airport. TSA said over 1,800 firearms nearly got through security checkpoints at airports across the country last year, 66 of them at Sky Harbor. Spokesman Nico Melendez said it is up to you to know what is in your bag.

“It’s incumbent upon passengers to check their bags before they come to the airport to make sure they’re not carrying guns, loaded guns, or any other kind of prohibited or illegal item before they come to the airport because it’s gonna slow them down at the security checkpoint," said Melendez.

Melendez said real weapons are bad enough but that mock guns that are pieces of art and lighters that look like grenades are also a problem because of the panic they can cause. He said if you have questions about what is allowed, download the TSA app for a full listing.
