Court of Appeals hears Glendale sales tax issue
The City of Glendale and a group trying to reverse a newly imposed tax increase are scheduled to appear in court Thursday. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Nick Blumberg reports.
In June, the Glendale City Council approved a 0.7 percent sales tax increase. The additional money would, among other things, help pay Greg Jamison, prospective buyer of the financially troubled Phoenix Coyotes hockey team, to manage the city-owned Jobing.com arena.
A group called Save Glendale Now wants to ask voters in November to reverse the tax increase. They collected enough signatures, but the city kicked the initiative off the ballot. Glendale said the group used misleading language and that the measure would violate election law. Earlier this month, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge upheld the city’s decision.
Save Glendale Now moved for a hearing before the Arizona Supreme Court, but was rejected. This morning, the case will go before a three-judge panel of the state Court of Appeals.
