Independents are now the largest voting bloc in Arizona, according to the latest numbers.

Of the 3.25 million Arizona registered voters, nearly 35 percent are independents. A report by Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett shows independents now outnumber Republicans by 4,000. Bennett said Democrats make up 29 percent.

“We could tell a few months ago that we were right on the verge of independents as a group probably over taking the Republicans about now. Every indication is that independents will continue to move up and the two parties will slide," Bennett said.

Bennett is a Republican who is also running for governor. He said the increase of  registered independents is due in large part to voters not wanting to be associated with either major political party.
