Recount underway in Congressional District 4 primary

Voting in the Arizona primary took place two weeks ago, but elections officials are still counting ballots in one congressional race. KJZZ’s Al Macias reports fewer than 20 votes separate the two candidates.

AL MACIAS: Johnnie Robinson leads Mikel Weisser by 19 votes in the Democratic primary for Congressional District 4. The sprawling western Arizona district covers seven counties. That slim margin automatically triggered a recount under state law. Matt Roberts with the Secretary of State’s office says even though the general election is two months away, the recount has to be completed and certified quickly .

MATT ROBERTS: The county recorders have to start printing  their ballots so they can ship them out overseas. They get to go out 45 days ahead of the election. That translates to Sept. 21. That’s next week.

MACIAS: The winner of the Democratic primary will face Congressman Paul Gosar, who chose to run in a new district after congressional
