Congressman Ed Pastor is endorsing Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox in the congressional race to succeed him. The long-time congressman said he wants residents to know who he is backing. Democrat Wilcox is serving her fifth four-year term on the County Board of Supervisors. Before that she served nine years in the Phoenix City Council.

Congressman Pastor announced in February he will retire after his term ends this year. He was first elected to congress in 1991. His Phoenix-area district is heavily Democratic.

Pastor said his district needs someone who is knowledgeable about local and national issues and is very involved in the community. He believes Wilcox fits that profile. Pastor said since the announcement of his retirement in February people have been asking who he was going to support.

“I figure as the campaigns are getting started and people will be gearing up then constituents or supporters who in the past have supported me and they want to hear of my input this is the best way for me to do it," said Pastor.

State Sen. Steve Gallardo and former state Rep. Ruben Gallego have also announced plans to run for the seat.
