One of the most narrow, winding roads in Arizona will be closed for a good chunk of the summer for repaving. The closure will affect State Route 89-A, north of Sedona.

Crews will move into the switchbacks through Oak Creek Canyon to begin a $2 million paving project on Monday. They will be repaving the roadway between Pine Flat Campground and Oak Creek Vista Overlook, between Sedona and Flagstaff.

The first traffic interruption will come between April 21 and May 22, when only a singlemlane of SR 89A will be open during the daytime hours. It will reopen for the Memorial Day weekend.

But in order to get the work done in a safe and timely manner, crews will close the roadway following the Memorial Day holiday, from May 27 until the start of the Fourth of July weekend, July 2.

Officials say those dates are the most favorable to apply the new pavement, which is temperature sensitive and needs to be laid down before the start of the monsoon season.

During the closure, motorists are advised to use SR 179 to Interstate 17, and on to Flagstaff. They say you should add an extra half hour to the time of your trip.
