Police in Goodyear are attempting to recover a device that contains potentially harmful radioactive material.

Spokeswoman Lisa Kutis says the nuclear density gauge was stolen from the bed of a pickup truck early Monday morning.

“This is a device which is commonly used in the construction industry,” Kutis said. “It is housed in a yellow case and it’s inside of a metal, diamond-plate box.”

Kutis says the small amount of radiation the device contains is only a health risk if somebody tampers with its safety seal. Even then, she says, it would take prolonged exposure.

Police say the area in which the device was taken has been monitored and no abnormal radioactive levels have been detected.
