Phoenix officers take oaths

January 03, 2013

More than 70 Phoenix police officers have retaken their oaths of office, even as some officers argue they shouldn't have to.

The ceremony held at Phoenix City Hall was part of a new policy by Police Chief Daniel Garcia aimed at reminding officers of their responsibility to the community. When taking the oath, officers swear to support the laws and the Constitution and defend against all enemies. The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association represents more than 2,500 patrol officers. The association calls the oath unnecessary because officers don't need to be reminded of their duty. But Chief Garcia says the pledge holds deep meaning because it's a connection to the community. Members of the police department ranging from the chief to rank-and-file officers have to take the oath every January. Those who haven't retaken the oath yet have until the end of this month.
