A national report shows a growing trend among high school graduates — males and minorities are taking longer to get a high school diploma.

The study by Rutgers University shows more men and minorities are finishing high school between the ages of 19 and 24.  Researchers say more stringent graduation and college admissions requirements may be part of the reason.  

The upside is the report shows the permanent drop-out rate is declining. Researchers attribute this to many students staying longer in school to finish, or getting a GED, the high school diploma equivalent. The report is published in the Education and Urban Society.
