It hasn’t been a good day for drivers using Interstate 17. Two serious crashes have caused long delays.

Early Friday morning, on a section of southbound 17, three people died when a driver traveling the wrong direction collided with a minivan. That crash happened about 30 miles north of Phoenix.

Three people in the minivan were killed. A young boy in the minivan was seriously injured. So was the wrong-way driver.

DPS says the suspect, a man in his 60s, was likely impaired.

A second crash later in the day involved a motorcycle traveling northbound. Authorities had to shut down traffic to one lane for a 9-mile stretch north of New River.

ADOT says anyone going north from Phoenix will face significant back-ups this afternoon.
