Actors Theater cancels remaining shows

February 13, 2013

A theater company that has operated in downtown Phoenix for 20 years has canceled the rest of its season. As KJZZ’s Peter O’Dowd reports, the Actors Theater announced Tuesday it is leaving the Herberger Theater because of financial trouble.

PETER O’DOWD:  The group says it was banking on $200,000 in revenue that did not materialize at the end of the 2012. So the Actors Theater is shutting down until it can find another location that makes better sense financially. Artistic Director Matthew Wiener says this means 24 performances will be canceled.

MATTHEW WIENER: The Herberger has been our greatest liability and our greatest asset for years. We loved performing there. The audiences loved going there.

O'DOWD: But Wiener says the agreement his group had with the theater did not work anymore because the Herberger took a surcharge on ticket sales. Plus, the Actors Theater couldn’t make money on extras like concessions. Weiner says actors will be working again this fall, but out of a temporary space instead.
