Police in Phoenix say they're investigating a case of animal cruelty involving the death of a dog.

They say a 1-year-old pit bull mix was locked in an SUV outside a Phoenix mall during excessive-heat conditions Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to Christown Spectrum Mall about 3:30 p.m. about a dog locked in a vehicle.

A mall parking lot security guard had alerted police to the situation.

Police say the dog later died of its injuries.

Officers located the owners of the dog, but no arrests have been made.

Police say an animal cruelty report is being submitted for review.
