The Phoenix City Council approved several measures Wednesday meant to solve its looming budget deficit. A dramatic change in parking fees and times was one of the more contentious topics.

It took more than an hour of debate, but the council did approve meter prices that will fluctuate from 50 cents to $4 an hour. Meters will also operate until 10 p.m., even on nights and weekends. These changes do not sit well with a handful of ASU students who spoke out during the meeting.

Allison Richardson said this will hurt students like her who use the school’s downtown campus.

"I feel like the transparency is not there, because none of my fellow students know what’s going on," Richardson said. "So I encourage you to talk more to the students and not just administrators at ASU."

Richardson said the school will benefit from the change because more students will then pay for ASU parking lots. The changes are set to take place in November and expected to raise between $1 million and $2 million.
