Al Melvin Ends His Campaign For Governor

State Senator Al Melvin is ending his campaign for governor. The Tucson Republican was having problems raising campaign contributions.
Melvin said he was short of the number of required qualifying $5 contributions to get public funding. He said without that cash he could not run a viable campaign, so he decided to pull out. Melvin said it’s too early to say if he’ll endorse any of the other Republicans still seeking the seat.
"Well, I haven’t decided yet," Melvin said. "And so I have to give it some time to think it over.”
The field in the August 26th GOP primary now narrows to six candidates — state Treasurer Doug Ducey, former Go Daddy executive Christine Jones, former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, Secretary of State Ken Bennett, former California Congressman Frank Riggs and former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas.
