Flake waiting out election challenge from Mark Kelly

April 18, 2013

Arizona Senator Jeff Flake says he's taking a 'wait and see' approach to the threat from Gabrielle Giffords' husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, to challenge him in the next election.

Flake, who was elected to a six-year term last November, joined the filibuster which prevented a vote on the measure to expand background checks on gun sales.

“Anybody can do what they want and that’s fine. He’s entitled to run against me or anybody he wants to," Flake said.

Giffords resigned from Congress after suffering a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head in the Tucson shooting rampage. Flake says he remains friends with her and with Mark Kelley and will remain their friend.
